Screenshot Analysis

There are many official and unofficial screenshots of SimCity 4 out there on the internet. We gathered a few shots and did an analysis of each part. Click on the red areas of the following screenshots to see a description of what that is or what that is believed to be.

Twister
My house! Cows Cul-de-sac Road Dirt path No Rubble Tornado leash

I don't think we're in Kansas: That's one mean tornado there. Houses aren't picked up, they're ripped up. Not onl that, but you can see the remains of the houses slowly make their way up the twister, and then go flying about. This time, we have realistic looking remains, unlike in SimCity 3000, where you had things that looked like books strewn about town when a tornado jogged past. This time, you can see pieces of a house (wood) in the tornado after a house is destroyed.

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a cow! Flying cows. Who else but Maxis? SimCity 4 goes way back to SimFarm when it comes to tornados. Back in SimFarm, a tornado always had a cow in the middle of it. When going through a farm area, cows go flying into the air in SimCity 4. While we're talking about farms... When the tornado picks up the cow, it is passing through open land. No field, no barn, just wide open land. Has Maxis not made farms? Or will they make them in the future? We can expect wheat fields etc. to be simulated in future screenshots. If Maxis got rid of farms in SimCity 4, it would almost be like not including llamas in the game. Speaking of which, where are tha llamas?

Cul-de-sac: After the dissapoinment of SimCity 3000, SimCit 4 finally has the type of street I lived on for 12 years: a cul-de-sac. This time it is a realistic, circular street that makes a dead end for a street. In SimCity 3000, it was impossible to make a decent cul-de-sac, as it was always lobsided. This probably isn't the default road ending, but an option for roads in SimCity 4. I wonder how they'll simulate houses around them. And if they can be of diffrent sizes.

Country road, take me home: Interestingly, Maxis still hasn't gotten diagonal streets to look all that great. Look at the ending of the street. It looks as bad as the end of a diagonal street in SimCity 3000. It doesn't look too bad, but still. Maxis should try to do soemthing about that. And they should also figure out how to get houses to build on the diagonal streets. That would be very nice.

Path of destruction: Unlike in SimCity 3000, where you could only tell where a tornado travelled by the trail of books and other bright ascessories, in SimCity 4, you have an actual trail of turned up dirt that you can see. The roads are also somewhat destroyed, unlike in SimCity 3000, where the roads were never touched by a tornado. But there is one thing that is left out...

Rubble? I don't see no rubble: It seems as though SimCity 4 has taken a step in the right direction when it comes to disasters. The rubble of a building is not visible. Very helpful to mayors who had to spend ten minutes finding and buldozing rubble after a disaster hit. Very annoying, I must say. This time, the buildings just disappear with the tornado. It is fairly likely that they will keep things like this, and that building rubble will not be in the final version. But you never know. After all, the buildings that were destroyed don't leave a zone under them either. This shows that SimCity 4 is still early in production, and zones have not been fully made.

Heel, tornado, heel! Theres that virtual leash every review has been talking about when it comes to tornados. A little yellow arrow that can be controlled, and is supposed to tell the tornado where to go. Just like a littl, disobediant puppy, that tornado certainly doesn't like following your every order. It'll take quite some pulling to get the tornado to go where you want it. And sometimes, the tornado will follow a path of its own.
