SIMCITY 4 SIMCITY 3000 THE SIMS 2 THE SIMS SPORE CLASSIC SIMS FORUMS |
Screenshot Analysis There are many official and unofficial screenshots of SimCity 4 out there on the internet. We gathered a few shots and did an analysis of each part. Click on the red areas of the following screenshots to see a description of what that is or what that is believed to be.
Working hard or hardly working? What you see in this picture is a grain silo being constructed. And you really see it constructed. Unlike in SimCity 3000, where you had a building that said it was such and such under construction, and stayed that way for months, SimCity 4 shows the building being constructed. You see a working crane, workers all over the construction site, a truck carrying material, scaffolding around the building... And to add to that, the scaffolding that is around the building actually fits to the shape of the building! Gone are the generic construction sites. Here come personalized construction sites! Back to Screenshot 2D or not 2D? That is the question: To the right of the building, we can see a shadow that follows suit with building construction. As the construction site gets larger, the shadow grows. As sims move along on the top, their shadows move on the ground. As the crane moves, its shadow moves. It gives an excellent graphical effect, and it really answers the question, is SimCity 4 fully 3D? The answer is yes. Back to Screenshot Moving on up! One very good addition to the eye candy in SimCity 4 is the fact that the building actually is constructed, more or less. The building and scaffolding don't just appear, and stay as tall as the building is at the end. Rather, as construction goes on, the scaffolding rises, one step at a time, until they finish the building, and then the scaffolding and crane fall back down to earth, and everything that was part of construction disappears. It really looks like a building is being constructed. Back to Screenshot Under the scaffolds: Watch the third IGN movie (the one this screenshot is from) carefully. Notice how you can see the top of the building that is being made from the sides and top? It seems as though buildings now grow from the ground. From the beginning of construction to the end, the top is always there. At the lowest point, you can see the top of the building, and not the bottom. This means that the building is actually underground, but you can't see it. It then grows with the construction. The building is not built, but rather, it grows. Now, about the truck... Back to Screenshot So that's what the building is made of! Some very nice eye candy is included in the game. You can see what the building is made of, more or less. That truck goes around dropping wood or whatever onto the ground, and then workers come out and pick it up, then put it in the building. All in all, it looks like the building is actually being constructed, unlike in SimCity 3000, where you had a buldozer drive around the roads around the construction site, and it didn't look too realistic. The crane is also functional. Back to Screenshot |
