SimTheme Park: Exposed
By Cameron
6/1/01

Some may dispute this simulation as not a true "Sim" so to speak, due to it's being created by Bullfrog. Although it has many "Sim" qualities, it's lagging in many. One starts the game by either choosing a Full game or a Quick game. In the quick game mode, you start the game with a starter park, while in full game mode you start from scratch. It is annoying although, that once you have started a game in quick mode you can't change it into a full game mode or visa versa.

Once you get into the game play, you start in one two worlds, Lost Kingdom or Halloween, with the one key you begin with. Lost Kingdom is themed like a pre-historic jungle with rides to go along. In Halloween world you can get some of the classic rides like a haunted house. In Land of Wonders you are confronted by large mushrooms and other whimsical fantasy tale objects. Then there's the Space Zone, the epitome of all the worlds where you take a ride on the Gravatron.

You can get up close and personal with this game by choosing the camera mode. In this mode you can be one of the tourists and ride the rides. To maintain your park you should hire service people, and to get new rides one may hire researchers, or get golden tickets because of how many people have entered your park. There is also a meter on the side of the somewhat clunky control bar that you can use to see the popularity of your park.

SimTheme Park is a very colorful game, and has fairly good graphics for 1999. Running on my 500mhz AMD Athlon, 256mb ram, 16mb Voodoo 3 card, Compaq Presario, I was able to have full graphics and the highest quality, while running at an excellent speed. On the other hand on a 500mhz Pentium III, 64mb ram, 6mb video, portable Compaq Presario, the performance was fair at best. It ran slowly even when the graphics and sound quality were at their lows. This may also be due to the fact that the desktop had 3 gigabytes of free space for virtual ram, while the portable on had 1 gigabyte of free space. Under 300mhz need not apply. To play the game enjoyable you should have at least the recommended requirements of a 300mhz Pentium II, 64mb of ram, an 8mb 3D hardware accelerator card, and a 16X CD-Rom drive.

SimThemePark

Overall I give the game a 2 1/2 globe rating out of five. Excellent graphics, fair game playonly if you have a computer that is up to par. The controls are clunky, and it can get boring fast if you can't earn enough money, not to mention a very annoying advisor that pops up and gets miffed if you don't listen to what it has to say. These game loses it's re-playability fast, something that Maxis games don't do. Sorry Bullfrog, leave the "Sim" line of games to Maxis.
