SIMCITY 4 SIMCITY 3000 THE SIMS 2 THE SIMS SPORE CLASSIC SIMS FORUMS |
Interview - Cameron & Matej from Sim Global Taken from http://www.simmedia.co.uk/ What is your name? SimGlobal is controlled equally by webmasters Cameron and Matej How old are you? We are both 16, close to 17 How long have you been open? 2 1/2 years as of January 1st 2004. What site do you operate and what is it's URL? SimGlobal.net, http://simglobal.net/home.shtml Where did you come up with your site name? We wanted to find a unique sim site name showing what we wanted to cover with SimGlobal- everything sim! So we came up with SimGlobal, the "Global" reflecting our commitment to give updates on all sim games. How did you go about creating your site? In middle school we both learned web design and decided that it would be cool to pool our talents and create a site about something we both loved- Sim games. We got some free web space at the now-defunct webexalt.com, slapped together some code, and called it a site. From there, we slowly grew to the current design by adding content and having a general idea of what we wanted SimGlobal to become. Where did you come up with the design for your site? Well, it has evolved from several other designs, but mostly we have designed around the whole "globe" scheme. Alot of my inspirations came from early versions of SimCity Central. The design also came out of necessity. After switching to SimGames.net, we needed a more manageable way to put the required ad on every page. We therefore had to redesign the site, and it came out as it is. How many staff members do you have, and whats your job? Just us two webmasters and Andro, our SimCity section manager. What's your favourite Fan Site other than your site? Cameron- Even though they are gone now, I have always loved http://web.archive.org/web/20041128161055/http://www.simpage.net/ Matej- Other than SimGlobal ;) http://sc4ever.com/forums/ What programs do you use to make your SimStuff? We created many of our downloads using the games. Along with that we have used Photoshop, PaintShop, and for all our HTML notepad! We have also dabbled with some of the special utilities out there that let you create skins and objects although I can't name any off the top of my head. Where do you get your objects, walls, skins, floors. . . ideas? We took our real homes that we played in from The Sims and applied them to SimGlobal. These aren't homes that we built for SimGlobal, but homes we wanted to share with the sim community. As for skins we made those mainly to reflect SimGlobal as well as our interests. Has your site always been free/pay? SimGlobal will always try to avoid being a pay site. We simply want to provide content for The Sims and SimCity for anyone who wants it. What web hosting service do you use? We have been with several, but currently, SimGames.net hosts us. Do you have a Forum? Yahoo Group? E-Group? Yes, http://simglobal.net/phpBB2/index.php How long have you been playing the SimGames and what made you? Cameron- Since 1996 with SimCity 2000, one of my first computer games. I guess I picked well! Out of all the Sim games I played SC2k the most and will alway cherish it as a game. Matej-Since 1992 with the original SimCity. I got it along with SimLife and SimAnt in a box for Easter. I really liked the open-endedness, and have since spent most of my money on Maxis. What's your favourite Expansion Pack for The Sims? Cameron-Its a close tie between Livin' Large and Unleashed. I think they both added the most content and therefore were the most valuable ones. Matej-I have to agree with Cameron, for the same reasons. What other non-SimGames do you play? Cameron- I love Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, all of the Need for Speed series, Halo, Counterstrike, Railroad Tycoon, Tropico, the list goes on! Matej-Though not a game, the flight simulator X-Plane is amazing. I also like Jane's F-15, Rise of Nations, the Need for Speed series, and Minesweeper. What advice would you give to anyone who might be thinking of starting a SimSite? Never get discouraged; creating a website should be a fun activity, not a stressful one. And don't worry if your site doesn't do too well in the beginning. SimGlobal began with a horrible color scheme and very few visitors. We're now more successful, and we're still slowly climbing in daily hits. Anything you want to add? It has been a great 2 1/2 years for SimGlobal, and we certainly are planning to be around for SimCity 5! |
