Life in SimCity Part II: The Disapearing Money Trick
By Matej
6/8/01

Last week, we peeked into the life of one of the sims (Sim Simson) in your megalopolis (Hugeville). We saw how Sim had a very hard time thanks to your ingenious road and rail layout, your wonderful parking facilities and your low tax rate. I recommend you read the previous article Life in SimCity Part I: Traffic Jam if you haven't already. Today's article is about Sim's budget breakdown.

Sim makes the low-low wage of §100 a day, 365 days a year, with the option of taking one day off at a time without pay. Including sick days, fun days, national holidays, and days when Sim just doesn't seem to want to get up and go to work, Sim ends up making approximately §30,000 a year. That rounds off to 300 working days every year. Then there is the casino, the Boeing scam, and the off-shore bank account, but no one knows about that except Sim, so we won't dwell on that (It's non-taxable). §30,000 a year is plenty of money to run a small city, but translated into personal accounts of sims, and you have a real problem.

Sim has a moderate apartment in the slums of the suburbs. It is moderately furnished with cheap items and not much luxury. This translates to §83 of bills every three days. That means he looses almost an entire day's salary every three days. This figure is without your 22% residential income tax that also comes every three days. Without the tax, Sim pays §10,043 worth of bills every year (365 days, 121 billable). That means that a third of his income is sliced off every year. Then we add tax. This means that Sim pays and extra §22 every three days with his bills, bringing his total bills for every three days up to a whopping §105 every three days. That means that he loses his entire salary that day, and he can't have a snack at the office the next day to make up the difference. But because we all know Sim only works 300 days out of the year, but still has to pay the taxes and expenses for the 65 he doesn't work, Sim loses a grand total of §12,705 a year thanks to bills and taxes.

Now, we all know Sim must eat something to stay alive. He spends §40 a day to feed himself (§10 a meal, 2 §5 snacks) except on bill days, when he spends §35 a day (§10 a meal, 1 §5 snack). What does this translate to, per year? Well, since we know that 121 days of the year are billable, we can presume that Sim spends 121x§35 or §4,235 on billable days during the year. That leaves 244 days of the year during which Sim spends §40 a day. That means Sim spends §9,760 a year on non-billable days. Sim's food expenses come to a total of §13,995 per year. That is quite some expense for just eating.

Sim Simson's total expenses per year are §26,700. That leaves him with §3,300 per year to put in his First Sim National Bank account. Every day, is left with an average of about §9 a day. But thanks to Federal Reserve Chairman of SimNation, Alan Greensim (He lowered the interest rate to a high 0%), Sim doesn't get any money from the bank. Maybe Sim will be able to afford the computer he wants in three years, or a major promotion. Next week: Conclusion about the life of Sim Simson.
