Life in SimCity Part I: Traffic Jam
By Matej
6/1/01

Everyone knows what it is like to scroll around a megalopolis in SimCity enjoying the view of the million-simoleon homes, the high-rise apartments, and astronomical land value. But, as in real life, the money fogs our vision, and we no longer care about how our Sims' lives are. We can only think of how we want bigger cities, more people, higher taxes, and fewer expenses. But what do your Sims think? Do they really like the Skyscrapers instead of trees, the huge industrial centers instead of a neighborhood sludge factory? Let us now go in to the life of a sim, called Sim Simson, who lives in a huge megalopolis, called Hugeville.

Sim Simson starts off his day early every morning. He lives on the top floor of a cheap high rise in the outskirts of town. His next door neighbors are a SimMars Research & Testing Facility, and a police station with an over oppressive police force. The first thing he does is shower in the water that often isn't there, thanks to a neighbor with an inconsistent water supply that is not helped by your pipe system. Then, he tries to eat, but the power went off after another power outage that night, so the milk soured up and he had to toss it out.

By 4:30 a.m., Sim is ready to leave his apartment. He walks over to the elevator, hits the button and waits. It finally comes at 4:45, and Sim steps in. He hit G for ground floor, and tried to catch up on sleep. The elevator stops five minutes later, in between floors 24 and 23. Another power outage. He climbs out of the elevator by the escape hatch, and pries open the door to floor 24. He takes the stairs to the ground floor, waves goodbye to the manager, who, at the time, was paying protection money to an officer from the near-by station. Sim walks the 43 blocks to where he found the nearest parking space available, and finds he was ticketed yet again.

Sim finally starts the car at 5:30, and putters off in the general direction of work. After three blocks, he runs into a traffic jam. The mayor was obviously passing (again). Luckily, Sim managed to get there late enough, so he only had to wait five minute for everyone to pass. From that point on to the city center (his workplace), it was stop and go traffic. It was always something. A train passing, a line of school children on their way to declare their love of Beowulf and even an eyeball that fell out of the science center but wasn't stopped in time. He finally reached his office in the city center, one of the Quigley Insurance buildings.

Sim is lucky, because he has his own reserved parking space at the Quigley Parking Garage, and it is only three blocks from Sim's building. He drives his car to the garage and takes a shuttle, provided by Quigley (You were too cheap to place a shuttle transport in your city), to his building. He is in middle management with a §30,000 a year salary. It would have been closer to §200,000, but overhead is so high (Thanks to your 22% commercial tax rate) that the company takes most of it.

You have just witnessed the daily routine of one of your sims in a huge megalopolis. Next week: Sim's Budget: Breakdown.
